Five Dojo precepts of Gichin Funakoshi

 

"Hitotsu! Jinkaku kansei ni tsutomura koto!".

"One! Strive for the perfection of character!".

 

"Hitotsu! Makoto no michi wo mamoru koto!”.

"One! Protect the way of the truth!”

 

"Hitotsu! Doryoku no seishin wo yashinau koto!".

"One! Foster the spirit of effort!".

 

"Hitotsu! Reigi wo omonzura koto!".

"One! Honour the principles of Etiquette!".

 

 "Hitotsu! Kekki no yu wo imashimuru koto!”.

"One! Guard against impetuous courage!”.

 

 

Dojo Etiquette.  

1. Each person apon arriving at the Dojo, on time, should be clean and well groomed right down to the fingernails and

    toenails, both of which should be well manicured.

2. Upon entering the Dojo, each person must bow, first to the Shomen (designated front of Dojo) then to the Sensei.

    The reverse is in order at completion of lesson.

3. No footwear or jewellry is permitted to be worn in the Dojo.

4. No footwear is permitted to be worn in the Dojo even by Guests.

5. No talking will be tolerated during the instruction of the lesson.

6. No talking will be tolerated whilst the Sensei is speaking..

7. Dojo Kun will be recited at the Beginning and End of each lesson.

 

Bowing.

 Rei..........................................................Bow.

Ritsurei.....................................Standing bow.

Seiza.................................................Kneeling.

Sensei Ni Rei......................To the Sensei bow.

Shomen Ni Rei......To the Shomen (front) bow.

Zarei...................................Kneeling bow.

Joseki.........Place of honour left of Sensei.

Kamiza.......Place where instructors kneel.

Shimoza.........Place where students kneel.

 

Clothing.

Gi........................................Karate iniform.

Uwagi..............................................Jacket.

Shitagi...............................................pants.

Kimono..............................................Robe.

Obi........................................................Belt.

Hakama.....Divided training pants. (Kobudo).

Zori.....................................Slippers/Thongs.

Tabi Socks....................................Toe Socks.
